Today is National Pride Day! What does this holiday represent?
Pride Day is celebrated on June 28th, marking the first pride march which was held in New York City in 1970. This was one year after police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village. Bar patrons, staff, and neighborhood residents rioted in the streets, leading to 6 days of protest. Activists demanded the establishment of places where LGBTQIA+ people could go and be open about their sexual orientation without fear of arrest. This sparked the annual remembrance of those who protested and celebration of the continued fight for equality and visibility of LGBTQIA+ folks in the US and worldwide. Pride Month became federally recognized as Gay & Lesbian Pride Month in 1999, now referred to as LGBTQ Pride Month.
