How To Take Breaks When Working From Home!

When you’re working remote, it can be hard to figure out what a break looks like... in an office, you have break opportunities to get coffee or water, or stop to chitchat with a coworker. These chances to physically step away are not naturally there when working at home, making it hard to refresh and feel focused.

Many find it challenging to take breaks out of fear they’re unproductive. But, taking a break is good for you!

Some benefits include:

  • Improved productivity

  • Reduced stress

  • Increased creativity

  • Improved physical health

Breaks are meant to recharge your mind and body, here are some ideas of how to take a break when you’re working from home:

  • Get physical. This can lower the effects of sedentary behavior on your health (heart disease, diabetes, obesity, etc.) - go for a walk!

  • Stretch. Help counteract the postures your body is forced to maintain for a long time. Hold your stretches for 30-60 sec!

  • Have fun online. Though most experts suggest stepping away from the screen on your break, do something that brings you joy - whether it's watching funny videos or online shopping!

There’s not a one-size-fits-all answer for how long your breaks should be, some ideas are:

  • 5 min every 25 min (the Pomodoro technique).

  • 10 min every 60-90 min, this gives you a decent amount of time to step away.

  • A movement break of 3 min every 30 min or 6 min every hour can counteract sitting's negative effects.

PRO TIP: Write your breaks into your schedule!
